After endodontic treatment, teeth and surrounding gum tissue may be tender for several days. This tenderness is to be expected and you will need to plan accordingly. It is recommended that you do not chew food on the affected side until your endodontic therapy is completed (including having your tooth covered with a protective restoration by your dentist). Discomfort is generally mild and may be alleviated by taking aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed.
A follow-up restoration must be placed to protect your tooth once endodontic treatment has been completed. Please call your regular dentist to schedule an appointment to have the permanent restoration placed. A complete report of your treatment will be provided to your dentist for his records.
Teeth are commonly more prone to fracture immediately after endodontic treatment. It is recommended that you chew on the other side until your restorative dentist has placed a more permanent, protective restoration. If the strength of your tooth has been seriously compromised, your restorative dentist may also place a post and core build-up inside the tooth. Between your restorative dentist and our endodontists, we will determine the most appropriate plan of action to best protect your tooth.
